The first quarter of 2009 has been challenging to most, and devastating to others. With bankruptcies and foreclosures being so high these days I thought it a bit amusing to read about other businesses that are actually doing well during this economy. According to local reports, Vodka sales are up approximately 12% over last year. Video game sales are still going strong. People are spending more time at home and less time going out for entertainment.
Another industry that seems to be doing well is Car Parts Stores. People are fixing the cars they have and doing more of the work themselves. This is a good way to save money. Many times even taking a car to a fix it place is more economical than getting a new vehicle.
Then I read in the news that Dunkin Donuts is going to be adding 17 new stores in the Memphis area. 17! With the economy down and money being tight, there are a lot of people skimping on the “healthy” breakfast and going for the easier on the wallet donut. You can still get a couple of fresh donuts for less than two bucks! They feel that the price and quality of their coffee will also give Starbucks a run for their money.
So, let’s review. There are a lot of people at home drinking vodka, playing video games, fixing cars and eating donuts. Due to this current situation, I also predict that emergency rooms will be booming with strange injuries this year. This sounds like the makings of an awesome reality show!
